This beautifully Giligia styled Shetani figure is carved out of a single piece of Mpingo (African Black Wood). It has grotesquely twisted faces and originates from the Makonde tribe of Northern Mocambique and Tanzania. The Makonde people see the Shetani as an evil-doer, or evil spirit related to the Shaitan (Satan and the Devil). Giligia carving is characterized by a figure with large protruding eyes and frightening teeth that project outside the mouth.
It is beautifully made - stands approximately 22" tall and 5" across the base and weighs 1.75 Kgs. This is a superb example of Makonde sculpture and is of Museum quality.
