It is always a great day to be on the Bay and we are delighted to offer this rare Bobo Tribe Burkina Faso Bobo Tribe Butterfly mask. Constructed of wood and pigment, the mask is attributed to the Bobo people of Burkina Faso, Africa. These masks are worn in front of the face, attached with a thick rope which the dancer holds in his mouth.

It can be decorated with concentric circles and or blackened geometrical markings and regularly feature a checkerboard backing. The geometric designs all have cultural meaning. The checkerboard pattern symbolizes the separation of light from dark, good from evil, and female from male. This mask represents a butterfly and is used to invoke the deity Do. This mask would be worn in ceremonies asking for rain and for fertility of the fields at planting time and after the harvest.

Dancers would mimic the motion of the butterfly, which it is said that immediately after the first rains, swarms of butterflies appear. This dance is made in hopes that the gods will cause rain to fall on the newly planted field. This piece is in very good condition, with signs of wear consistent with age and use. It measures approximately 24 diameter x 11 high.

We ask that you carefully review the photos as they tell so much more than we can articulate; and that you zoom in for a closer look at any and all condition issues. As always, we thank you for taking a moment to consider this piece. The item "Bobo Burkina Faso African Hand Carved Wood Butterfly Mask Tribal Africa 24x11" is in sale since Tuesday, April 30, 2019.
